2.2.8. Data Reception

Receiving data produced by third it is a daily operation. Either for prices, notice, wheater conditions or only mathematical calculations. Today we have a big set of situations where this receiving showed itself productive (and lucrative!). And third part can be, also, a user of the same network, what guarantees an information confidence.

Receive data in Real Time directly in Excel, also it is a beneficial characteristic.

The Real Time Excel Network allow all this functions in one time, or, receiving data inside a Excel network. Allows too the data transmission, but we will talk about it in the next item.

2.2.8.1. Function BD.ALIAS

Access:

  • Menu - Insert | Function | Broadcaster
  • - Barra de ferramentas Default | Broadcaster

Description: Receive, in real time, a data transmitted in Real Time Excel Network (CoRTEx).

All data send thorugh CoRTEx have an id, name or nickname (will be more explored in transmission topic). To receive something, it is necessary know the nickname first.

The Real Time Excel Network also is a multi servers network. Each user connected to the network also is a data server. As well, to identify a data in the CoRTEx you need know who is the sender. In principle, this can seem restrictive. But in such way, users can transmit the same info (or nickname), fitting to receiver decide which of them is of interest.
In example, if the data nickname is "dollar", the receiver may choose receive "dollar" from "parallel" or "dollar" from "travelling".

The origin identification, is the name of the workstation or computer that is transmitting the data. The previous topic give more details about it. To the receiver, is important only know the computer name that it is transmitting the searched nickname.

To receive data, its necessary, so, make a couple of nickname versus server.

Call: BD.ALIAS ( Nickname, Server)

Argument

Type

Description

Nickname

string

Data nickname transmitted by a server. Must be a text.

Server

string

Computer name that is transmitting the data in real time by it name. Must be a text as the name of the transmitting workstation.

However the nickname and the server must be informed as text. In contrary, the system will return error #NAME.

The system return the searched data by the nickname in the transmissor. If the transmissor does not exist, the system will return ??? (version 1.0.4 and older) or ?..? (version 1.0.5), indicating that it was not possible to establish the connection. The system also return ??? (version 1.0.4 and older) or ?..? (version 1.0.5) when is trying to establish a connection with the server. In this way, the typed name must be verified or if the server is on only while the system keep showing ??? (version 1.0.4 and older) or ?..? (version 1.0.5). And for a server be able, it needs to be connected to the CoRTEx and not only to the normal network.

A situation may, however, induce user to make mistakes. If the receiver perform the search for a nickname and does not find the server cause it is out of the CoRTEx, the system return ??? (version 1.0.4 and older) or ?..? (version 1.0.5). If, immediately afterwards, the transmissor searched go in the Real Time Excel network, the receiver will keep receiving invalid server information. However, nothing must be made, cause the system will try to find the server automatically after some time (see the topic about configuration of administrative tasks).

If a server of a nickname does not be found, the system keep the search for the server in consecutive time intervals. If the server will be permanently out from CoRTEx, it is advised to erase the formula to prevent unnecessary system tasks.

Important: The reception returns ??? (version 1.0.4 and older) or ?..? (version 1.0.5) when a server cannot be found (or not yet was found).

When the transmissor or server is correctly connected to CoRTEx and the receiver type a data nickname not transmitted by this server, the syste, return ?WHO?, indicating that the name of the nickname must be revised.

Important: The reception return ?WHO? for a nickname not found in the server that transmit the data.

There is some considerations about receiving data and Excel status. In example, while a formula is edited, Excel is in edition status, where many functionalities (menus, operations etc) are disabled. There is other normal operations in Excel that also disable some functionalities.
This is important cause data receiving through BD.ALIAS also it is disabled in certain status. In example, while user is editing formula, the data receiving it is disabled and all the system will lose its updates. The topic about configuration include the indication or not through a sound alarm for lost updates.
In general, the data reception system will not receive updates ever that Excel be in a status that blocks normal functioning of all the functions.

Important: The data receiving it is blocked when the Excel be in formula edition mode!

The reception of data still counts on colors of update of data. But this also will be detailed in the configurations topic.

Using Example:

In this example, the data server will be transmitting (next topic) the data 14.5% through the nickname.
  • Nickname: "rate"
  • Data Server: "fixed_income_trader"
= BD.ALIAS( "rate", "fixed_income_trader")

Results:

14.45

The result changes ever that transmissor modify the transmitted value.

If the receiver type "rates" (observ the plural), the result will be ?WHO?. If the "fixed_income_trader" is off, the result will be ??? (version 1.0.4 and older) or ?..? (version 1.0.5).
