2.2.9. Data transmission

The purpose of any transmission of data is to allow that other users can share the same information. And this transmitted information it is, sometimes, result of a simple retransmission (quoting systems), but can be result of an analysis or a set of calculations made by a specialist.

The purpose of any transmission of data is to allow that other users can share the same information. And this transmitted information it is, sometimes, result of a simple retransmission (market price vendors), but can be result of an analysis or a set of calculations made by a specialist in the subject.

The data transmission over the Real Time Excel network allows sending data from Excel to all users of a same network, increasing sharing of useful and selected information.

2.2.9.1. Function BD.BROAD

Access:

  • Menu - Insert | Function | Broadcaster
  • - ToolBar Default | Broadcaster

Description: Transmit a data in Real Time Excel Network. Return the transmitted data.

The system allows to transmit data in Microsoft Excel cell in text format (i. e. “Coffe Price”) also in numeric format (i. e. 31,154). Dates can be transmitted, once the dates are represented as numbers in Excel. It is not possible, althought, transmit a region or interval of cells. Transmit a empty cell, it is equivalent to transmit value 0.

The data transmission it is made through a nickname distribution to the data transmitted. This nickname is the same used on the data receiving (see topic about receiving data).

The nickname always must be a text, not being allowed to use numerical nicknames. However, a number always can be represented as a text, just adding it between quotes (i. e. ”31,154”). This practical, although possible, must be prevented, therefore it can generate confusion of the receiving user.

To the system be able to transmit the data, is necessary, so, make a couple of data or information versus nickname.

Call: BD.BROAD ( Data, Nickname)

Argument

Type

Description

Data

string, double

Data or Information to be transmitted. Must be a text, a numeric value or a cell (containing a text or a numeric value or containing a function whose result a text or a numeric value).

Nickname

string

Nickname of the transmitted data. Must be a text and will be used to identify the information on the receiver.

The nickname must be informed always as text. Else, the system will return error #NAME (version 1.0.4 and older) or ?"ALIAS"? (version 1.0.5).

In case of any Excel formula which has returned an error (ex. #DIV/0) be transmitted, program will return error #ERROR (version 1.0.5).

It is not possible to transmit nicknames started with ?, the system will return !Bad Alias! (version 1.0.5) if it identify the character ?. This character it is reserved for the beginning of nicknames.

Its good to stand out that the user cannot choose the name of its server. This is a configuration made the network administrator, where are found the computers connected to the CoRTEx.

All the times that the value be changed or the calculations remade, a new data will be transmitted. In other words, all the times that the function be calculated, the data will be transmitted.

Important: The data will be transmitted all the times that the function be recalculated!

Once a nickname be attributed to a data, this nickname will represent the data in Real Time Excel Network.

Some comments become important treating about data nickname. If the user use the same nickname for two data, all times that one be updated, the network will receive the information. In example, if the user use the nickname "price" para representarthe price to ox arroba and repeat this nickname for the dollar price, on data receiving, will have update of the nickname "price" all times that both arroba price as dollar price be changed. That is, the receiver will not have how know which information it is been received. So, fits to the transmitter keep the coherence of the nickname transmitted. As general rule, must prevent repeating nicknames, also to same data (cause unnecessary an additional traffic of data in network).

Important: Repeating nickname for different data makes with that last one be updated (or transmitted) be the correspondent for the nickname!

Other characteristic of nicknames is that they are local, or better, are valid only for a computer or workstation, been independts from Excel instances. On CoRTEx can have many equal nicknames how many computers connected to it, been a nickname for each station.

Important: The validity of a nickname is local!

Using Example 1:

Using the same example used for receiving data, the "fixed_income_trader" may transmit "rate" through the Real Time Excel Network.
  • Data: 14.5%
  • Nickname: "rate"

= BD.BROAD( 0.145, "rate")

Results:

14.5%

The transmission ever return the same data transmitted.

Using Example 2:

Using the same example, the user that receive the data "rate" from "fixed income trader", could transmit the date which it want the rate information. This date would be received by the tabel of over, calculating and returning the rate through the Real Time Excel Network.
  • Data: 09/01/2004 - dates, are represented by numbers in Excel
  • Nickname: "date"

= BD.BROAD( 38231, "date")

Results:

09/01/2004

Again, the transmission always return the same data transmitted.

This second example shows the system potencial. A user informs the date that he want interest information, transmit for a third part, that recalculate the rate based on the date and give back in the same network. Obviously the nicknames must be more specific, as "someone_date" and "someone_rate".
